BBC Focus Magazine

Focus On Arachnophobia

BBC Focus, a popular science and technology publication, produced an issue surrounding phobias. To create a buzz and provide an interactive feature for their readers, BBC Magazines wanted to incorporate augmented reality within the issue.

According to studies, 50% of women and 10% of men suffer from arachnophobia, making it the most common phobia. Our job was to create a unique experience that played on this phobia which resulted in the idea for the virtual spider.

Inspired by exposure therapy where patients are gradually confronted with their fear, the aim was to recreate that level of anxiety through this virtual media.

Hidden's development team meticulously detailed a 3D rendering of the most common house spider. We then combined this with animation and a chilling backing track to set the scene.
