AECOM required a suite of digital training tools to prepare US Airforce recruits in identifying IEDs. Having previously relied on static PPT-led training, they wanted to shift their approach to an interactive, immersive experience that would appeal to gaming-savvy Millenials whilst harnessing serious training methodology.
The solution we devised was two-fold. Built as a mobile tablet app for optimum portability, the first section leads recruits to the ‘petting zoo’ – a familiarisation area where the devices and threats they will encounter are presented for them to study and understand, including augmented reality layers to project IEDs into the real world around them.
The second zone is a 360° simulated street environment, where recruits are tasked with identifying threats against the clock. In Virtual Reality, voice commands are used to control the Samsung Gear and Occulus Rift VR headsets for total immersion.
An additional dashboard interface gives instructors the opportunity to watch live feeds and evaluate students’ scores and performance data.
